Almost every football pitch in Chișinău is synthetic — the city has exactly one natural-grass pitch, Pitch F at Joma Arena. That changes which boots are actually worth buying, because most of what sits in shop windows — the same boots worn by the professionals you watch on television — is built for natural grass, with long studs meant to dig into soil. On a synthetic pitch, those same studs catch in the artificial fibres instead of releasing the foot, and the mismatch isn't just uncomfortable — sports-medicine research ties it directly to knee and ankle injuries. Below: which sole suits each pitch type in the city, what the rules say about studs, and how to tell when a pair has reached the end of its life.
Four soles, built for four different surfaces
Manufacturers sort boots by the surface they're designed for, and the code usually sits on the box or the outsole itself:

FG remains the default on shelves, because it's what most professionals wear on natural grass. The problem starts when someone buys FG because a favourite player wears it, then plays every week on the one pitch actually available in the city — a synthetic one. AG exists for exactly that situation: many short studs spread the load across the whole sole instead of concentrating it in the few points that catch in an artificial carpet.
The wrong stud on synthetic turf reaches the knee, not just the boot
A systematic review published in Sports Medicine – Open found that using FG studs on artificial turf significantly raises plantar pressure and foot fatigue, increasing the risk of stress fracture. More seriously, long or screw-in studs — typical of FG and SG — generate excessive rotational torque on synthetic surfaces when the foot twists sharply, a pattern described as foot-lock: the foot stays anchored longer than it should, and the force of the turn goes into the ankle and knee instead of releasing. The same review links this mechanism to a higher rate of anterior cruciate ligament rupture and ankle sprain, and roughly 62% of ACL ruptures in football on artificial turf happen with no contact from another player at all — the foot gives way on its own, locked to the surface.
The big toe gives out first
Turf toe is a sprain of the joint at the base of the big toe, caused when the toe is forced to bend too far upward. The most-cited figure comes from a survey of American football players — 45% reported having had turf toe at least once, and 83% of those cases happened on artificial turf — but the mechanism applies to any sport played on a hard pitch: a sole that's too flexible at the front, combined with a surface that gives almost no cushioning on impact, leaves the joint unprotected. A stiffer sole around the toe area lowers the risk. If pain or swelling doesn't settle within a few days, it needs a doctor — not rest and hope.
Indoor courts need a completely different sole
An AG or TF sole, built for outdoor artificial grass, has no place on parquet or tartan flooring. The rubber lugs that grip synthetic fibres well slide on a smooth indoor surface and can scuff or mark the floor. Indoor sport needs a fully flat, soft-rubber sole, built for futsal or an indoor sports-hall surface — a category sold separately from both AG and TF. Anyone playing both outdoors and in a hall effectively needs two pairs, not one that "works everywhere".
What the rules say about studs
Law 4 of the Laws of the Game, published by the International Football Association Board, bans any equipment that is dangerous and leaves the pre-match equipment check to the referee's judgement. Metal studs are allowed, but worn, sharp or exposed-shaft studs must be rejected on inspection, because a cracked edge — metal or plastic — can cut an opponent. The rules set no maximum stud length; the only condition is that studs must not be dangerous, and the final call stays with the referee on the pitch.
A bad fit hurts as much as the wrong studs
Size matters as much as stud type. The heel should sit locked in place, with no slipping when walking or running; across the midfoot the boot should feel snug, like a firm hug, not a squeeze. At the toe, leave about 4-8 millimetres between the longest toe and the end of the boot — enough that toes aren't cramped, not so much that the foot slides forward under hard braking. Lacing the foot down properly cuts the friction that causes blisters and reduces the chance of a twisted ankle from the foot shifting freely inside the boot. Break a new pair in gradually — short sessions first, then a full match — so the upper has time to shape itself to the foot before it matters.
The signs a pair needs replacing
Studs rounded off at the tip or cracked along the edge are the first visible sign — and exactly what a referee rejects at a pre-match check under Law 4. If the sole loses its stiffness and bends too easily at the toe, the risk of turf toe rises even if the boot still looks fine from the outside. Black or bruised toenails after a match usually point to a boot that has become too short, not one that's simply worn — at that point the problem is sizing, not age.
